National Women’s Union of Tunisia, the first national women’s organization founded in 1956 immediately after the declaration of Tunisia’s independence.
The establishment of the National Union of Tunisian Women was the birthplace of the progressive measures for the benefit of women, especially the issuance of the Personal Status Code on 13 August 1956.
Since its early years, the Federation has focused its activities on organizing national awareness campaigns in the field throughout the Republic to make women aware of their role in social and economic development.
The structure of the Union has developed and its regional, local and national branches have spread throughout the country and participated in mobilizing all women’s forces to contribute to the building of the modern Tunisian state and to demand the defense of women’s rights as an integral part of human rights.
The Federation has sensitized women politically to carry out their national duties and to encourage them to perform their electoral duties, enabling them in 1959 to win their right to vote and run for office.
